Hello: This is our first question about the seals. My

students are wondering if there is a difference in the thickness of

the blubber between seal pups and older seals?

This is actually one of the questions we will be addressing in this year's field study. We hope to have that answer a little later in the season.

We predict that pups have less blubber when they are born because they use their fur (known as lanugo) to insulate themselves until they build up their blubber layer which occurs during the time they are nursing (also known as the weaning period).
