First Pup!!

Today our team went out to Tent Island to check and see if there were any pups that we could sample. Shane found one around the north end of the island so Steve and Jay hitched up the seal sled to our rented Piston Bully and headed over. Our first pup was a cutie!! He weighed 190 pounds and 53 inches long, 47.5 inch chest girth and is only 5 weeks old. Compared to Steve, he is 73 inches tall, 190 pounds and a 44 inch chest girth and Steve is 46 years old. Pretty amazing that a baby seal is the same size as an adult human.
The pup was a little noisy and moved around quite a bit but our procedure went well although everyone was a bit more stressed since it was our first pup. After, we all carried him in the sling back to where we found him so when his mom got back from feeding she could find him.
Hopefully tomorrow we will find another and it will go as well as today.
